Water Damage and Your Home

By: Tymon Hytem

Whether you live near a natural water source or not, water damage can happen in any home.  It is important to make sure to get the water damage taken care of as quickly as possible.  If you do not take care of it fast, you can incur expensive home repairs secondary to the water damage.  Keep in mind that standing water is the worse type of water to have in you home from the standpoint of rot, mildew and rust which can cause very costly damage to your homes interior.

Here are some ideas to help prevent water damage from your home.
Every year, you need to give you home a quick maintenance check.  Take the time to check that all of your gutters are working properly.  Make sure that they are not clogged and that they are adhered securely to your home.  This will help to make sure that water does not stay in and around your home seeping down the foundation into your basement.
Take the time to make sure to inspect every window and door around your home.  Make sure that there is no wood rot.  If you have wood rot, then it can go further into the walls and cause mold to grow.  This will cause very costly repairs as mold tends to have to be completely removed in order to get it out of your home.  You will also want to check the caulking around your windows and doors as well.  If there are any cracks or any pulling away of the caulking, make sure to replace it as soon as possible.  If not taken care of, it can allow moisture and water to come into the house and cause problems in the window casing and window sills; a very costly job that can be avoided if you take the time to really inspect your home on a yearly basis.
Take the time to make sure to check that all of your homes appliances that deal with water are working properly and that there are no leaks from hoses.  This includes a sump pump if you have one.  The majority of basement floods occur because sump pumps fail to work properly.  All it takes is a quick check to see that it is working up to par and you can avoid the costly problems of water damage by avoiding that flooded basement.
If you take care of your home and really keep on top of maintenance issues then you will be able to avoid water damage issues in your home.  Take the time to check everything at least once a year in the spring time when you do your spring cleaning.  This will ensure that your home is in working condition and you can avoid water damage from broken appliances and pipes.
