Types of Solar Power Systems For Private Or Commercial Use

By: Adrian Fletcher

By utilizing solar energy you can generate electricity that can power your home or commercial property. It can even power your RV. There are all sorts of solar power systems that can be used. This article will list some of the solar power systems available and cover what conditions they are best suited for.

If you have a vehicle that requires a power source like a boat or an RV then a portable solar power system may be the best bet. It is smaller than a system that might power a home, so will be cheaper and easier to maintain. It will not give out the same capacity as a bigger system but is flexible enough to be moved around to capture every ounce of sunlight.

The basic set up of a stand alone system for generating electricity is one or more solar panels. These are generally connected to one or more batteries that will store DC current. As most appliances in the home and business use AC current an inverter is needed to convert from DC to AC.

For those that like an each way bet or are new to solar power electricity there is the grid tie solar power system. This means that the home or business building is still connected to the grid but has a solar panel installed too. The grid-tie system will have an inverter that changes the DC current into the purest sine-wave AC electricity so that it will mesh with the utility grid. Thus there is a seamless connection between the solar and grid electricity.

In this system there is generally no need for a series of batteries because the electricity that is created is essentially stored by the utility company. This obviously makes it a lot easier to operate and maintain as the utility company will install and maintain it.

The natural evolution in using solar power to generate electricity in your home or business is to go completely off grid. You will not be reliant on the utility company. You will save money and you will have an environmentally friendly method of creating energy for your property. However there is more responsibility and time consuming tasks involved in running an off grid system and this might not be for you.

The complete off grid system will contain more inverters, probably two, so that there will be enough current to run large appliances like air conditioners and electric heaters. It also gives the solar power system more flexibility in that one can be operated while the other is being maintained.

Another reason for going for an off grid set up is when there is no grid to connect to. This is the case in isolated areas where the utility companies have not got round to installing a network. In these situations the solar power system would be the primary source of electricity and would be a vital to the home or business that it operated in.

Hybrid systems are also used in remote regions or in homes where the aim is to be self sufficient in energy. A hybrid system is simply a coordination of two separate energy generating systems. In remote areas, a hybrid system would comprise of a solar and wind system. It may also be a solar and generator system for creating electricity. The generator would be a fossil fuel powered device that could back up or compliment the electricity created by the soar system.

Again, it depends on how much time or money you have but to have as many contingencies to your solar power system is the best way to go as you can't always rely on the sun. So why not have a solar/wind/generator system. This would be more complex to operate but would cover your energy needs no matter what type of weather you experienced.
