Taking Care of Smoke Damage in Your Home.

By: Tymon Hytem

Cleaning up your home after a fire is a very difficult undertaking.  Not only do you have fire damage, but you will have smoke damage as well.  Damage from smoke will affect everything from the walls, to furniture to clothing.  You can end up spending a large amount of money just to have the odor removed or to replace the items that still smell like smoke.  There are some things that you can do which will help prevent the loss of items and spending and exorbitant amount of money to replace them.
The first thing that you need to do is to start the clean up process.  You need to open up your windows to allow for the smell of smoke to air out of your house.  This will also help to dry out anything that was covered in water from the firehoses.  Like fire, smoke will leave black debris over surfaces and will need to be removed properly.  By using a cleaner on solid surfaces, you should be able to remove the majority of the damage.  However, things like furniture, carpeting and other upholstery will need to be approached in a different manner.  Using a small brush or a vacuum will help to remove smoke particles from these areas.  This needs to be done very meticulously as it can cause soot particles to go where you really don’t want them.
There are some things to avoid when cleaning up after fire and smoke damage.  You do not want to wipe or wash any painted surface.  This will only allow the soot to go deeper into the surfaces.  Never shampoo your carpeting as this can possibly cause staining as well as ground in smoke smell that will be next to impossible to remove.  Make sure that if you are sending your clothing out to be cleaned that the company you choose knows how to remove soot and smoke odor properly.  Do not clean any electrical appliances.  Leave this up to the professionals.
Your best bet when it comes to fire and smoke damage is to let the professionals do their jobs.  They know how to do it without causing more damage to your things.  And your homeowners insurance usually pays for the professionals to come in and do the job.
